Data Center Upgrade

Overview

Data Center Services is adding a second uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, and replacing the current heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in the IT Data Center with new systems that will better handle current and projected requirements. The IT Data Center houses and provides support for over 180 servers, quality control services, and software monitoring.

Business Case

The growth in number of servers housed in the IT Data Center will soon cause the capacity of the current HVAC and UPS systems to be exceeded. The HVAC replacement is needed due to the age of the current system, as well as to its lack of expandability. An additional, comparably-sized UPS will accommodate the new servers, as well as extend the battery backup time to a more reasonable interval.

Project Status

As of August 4, the first phase of asbestos removal in the Math Sciences building has been completed and the chilled water plumbing installation for the west CRAC units has commenced. A second phase of asbestos removal will be required when the new air conditioning system is in place and the old ductwork is removed.

New mechanical room equipment has been ordered and should arrive in approximately nine weeks. In the meantime the new electrical feeds into the building will be completed and several CRAC units will be plumbed. When the new power is available, the CRAC units will be used with temporary duct work while the old duct work is demolished.

This project is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2007.
