NAT Documentation

The IT and Residential Life departments are currently working together to limit university liability and protect Residential Life users regarding network usage. To address these issues, IT will be utilizing a "Network Address Translation" architecture (NAT). NAT is a mature networking technology that can hide internal network infrastructure from the external internet community. Utilizing NAT will make Residential Life systems invisible to the outside world, while not interfering with their usage of internet resources. The use of NAT on-campus will be transparent to both Residential Life users and the rest of campus.

NAT will also prevent the "accidental" sharing of copyrighted material. Systems in Residential Life cannot be accessed from the outside world without the user registering their system as a "server". A typical Residential customer will not have to do anything to access internet resources. The only time a Residential Life system will need to be "registered" is when the student wants his system to be accessible to internet users.

Registration is Simple!! Click Here (Server registration page must be accessed from the machine you wish to register.) Other advantages of the NAT architecture include:
  • Protection of residential life machines from external attack
  • Allows legitimate high-bandwidth applications
  • Simple and uses proven technology
  • Prevention of Residential Life machines from acting as a "server" to the internet unless registered
  • Registration is simple and quick
  • Architecture is budget friendly
