CIS will support three makes of print servers; HP (internal or external), Lantronix and Xerox. Most printers with either a serial or parallel port can utilize one of these makes of print server.
If the printer has a parallel port, the HP JetDirect External print server should be used (be sure to purchase a model which is TCP/IP capable). If the printer does not have a parallel port but does have a serial port (which is the case for many older makes of Apple printers), then the Lantronix print server should be used.
Xerox print servers should generally be used only for Xerox printers.
CIS does not have the resources or the time to learn every configuration utility necessary to support any printer on campus. By standardizing on these three, CIS feels that we can provide more expedient and dependable service to the majority of the campus population.
