Boot P/IP

What is a BootP entry?
BootP is a means of reserving a specific hostname and IP address for use by a particular system. It eliminates the need to manually enter or hardcode IP information, thus making moves or changes easier.

How does BootP work?
If properly configured, a booting system will send a request to obtain the TCP/IP information it should use. Included in this request is hardware address and location of the sending system. The BootP/DHCP server searches for an IP address reserved for the sender's address. If a match is not found or the system is not in its home network, the server responds with a DHCP lease, which is automatically renewed every 48 hours. If a match is found (BootP entry), the server responds with the IP address reserved for the sender's system.

The BootP and IP Assignment Lists are available for download from dc.cis.okstate.edu.
