Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, sometimes called digital certificates, are used to establish an encrypted connection between a browser or user's computer and a server or website.


OSU subscribes to InCommon for security certificates. InCommon, a federated organization of higher education institutions, issues various types of digital certificates in which secure encrypted connections between a user’s computer and the destination server or website. These certificates are backed by the Sectigo Certificate Authority, a commercial entity that provides web security solutions.

Getting Started

To acquire an SSL certificate, you will need to generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). View directions for generating a CSR. Once you have generated the CSR for your server or website, you may request your certificate two ways. You may either: 

  1. Visit the SSL Certificate Request Form where you will be prompted to login with your O-Key Account credentials and authenticate through Multifactor Authentication (MFA).

  2. Start a support ticket by using this link: Request Help.

    Please provide the following information in the issue field:

    1. Certificate Type - e.g. SSL or SANS SSL

    2. Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

    3. Associated Campus - e.g. OSU, OSU Tulsa, OSU CHS, Other

    4. Server URL - e.g.

  3. Submit the request and a certificate will then be generated within two business days.
