Authenticating for Wired Network Connection
What’s Changing?
Currently, wireless access on campus requires O-Key login credentials for authentication. With this change, the same level of security will now apply to wired Ethernet connections. Here’s what you can expect:
- Initial Connection Redirect: The first time a device is connected to a wired port, users will be redirected to a login page.
- O-Key Authentication Required: Users must log in with their O-Key credentials to gain access.
- Device Registration: Once authenticated, the MAC address of the device will be registered for 130 days, allowing for seamless access during that period.
- Reauthentication: If a device’s MAC address changes (e.g., after a hardware reset or network adapter swap), reauthentication will be required.
Note: This change will roll out gradually during the summer and applies only to the Stillwater campus at this time.
Why Is This Change Happening?
This update strengthens our cyber security and aligns with national best practices for securing campus IT infrastructure. This authentication process helps:
- Prevent unauthorized or unmanaged devices from accessing the network.
- Protect sensitive university systems and data.
- Comply with cybersecurity best practices across higher education institutions.
Common Questions
- What if I don't know my MAC address? You will not need to know your device's MAC address. When you login for the first time the device's MAC address will automatically be registered.
- What is a MAC address?A MAC (medium access control) address is a unique code given to a device’s network connection (like Wi-Fi or Ethernet) that helps identify it on a local network. It's kind of like a name tag that lets other devices know who it is when sending or receiving information.
- How will I connect a device that does not have the capability for interactive (web)
authentication?
As this change is rolled out, IT administrators will be given access to register the MAC addresses for devices that can’t do interactive (web) authentication (printers, SCADA, laboratory equipment, cameras, computer labs, etc.).
- Is there a limit on how many devices a user can register? No, there will not be a limit.
- Will devices that are currently connected still need to be registered?Yes, everything will need to be authenticated.
- What happens if there are MAC address conflicts? There should never be a MAC address conflict since these addresses are individually encoded to each specific device.
Steps to Authenticate
Here’s what the login process will look like for first-time wired connection users:
-
Connect Your Device to a Campus Ethernet Port
Once connected, try to open any website. You’ll be redirected to a login portal. Enter your Okey username and password.
-
Enter Your O-Key Credentials
Enter your Okey username and password. Once authenticated, your device will be granted access and registered for 130 days. You won’t need to log in again unless your device changes network hardware.
-
Successful Login
Once authenticated, you will be redirected to the OSU homepage. Your device will be registed granted access for 130 days. You won’t need to log in again unless your device changes network hardware.
